At the end of the year Jelgava Local Municipality officials and council members were introduced to the most important activities of the Project “Transforming rural regions by launching scenarios, new narratives and attractive urban design” (Trans in Form). These activities are related with the development of an interactive public space in the park of Eleja Manor.
The presentation of the park’s dendrological research and scenic solutions for placing interactive objects took place. In the past few months a technical project has also been elaborated for the further development of the park. During the meeting presentations were hold by the architect Ēriks Cērpiņš and sculptor Gļebs Panteļejevs who is the author of the interactive object – sculpture of the duchess Dagmāra.
The legend tells that the duchess Dagmāra Medem of Eleja manor was in love with the local police chief, but her father was against this relationship. Dagmāra jumped out of the window. People say that during the dark November nights she still strolls through the Eleja Park holding a lantern.
Continuing this theme of a romantic and unhappy love we invite visitors to take a walk in the ancient park entwined with an aura of romance. It is planned to restore the network of historical footpaths and to set up garbage bins as well as small benches for rest. We start the walk at the entrance of the park, continuing in the direction of the tea house, which is a symbolic and romantic object that has lasted since its building. It is planned to partially reconstruct the open-air stage that will serve for organizing local and international events, and will be the place where people of Jelgava Local Municipality will gather.
The bridge has been established over the pond and on the demi-island where everyone is welcomed to tell their loved ones their earnest desires and the most secret words with the help of the “Conversation”. The interactive object “Conversation” will not reveal the words to others; they will remain a secret between two people.
Culmination of the walk is the meeting with the duchess Dagmāra, the sculpture which is planned to be installed in one of the most beautiful spots of the park. In order to show that the heart in love still beats one will be able to feel heat near the sculpture that will contrast with the cold material of the sculpture – metal. Also a motion will start a simple mechanism that will allow hearing Dagmāra’s heartbeats.
In order to implement these activities a project prolongation application will be submitted.
Eleja Manor Park is very significant for Jelgava Local Municipality as a historical heritage as well as a place for large scale open-air events.
